Excess Soil Management for Commercial Redevelopment in GTA
Following a series of site assessments and targeted remediation activities for soil and groundwater impacted by petroleum hydrocarbons, XCG was requested to assist in the characterization, management, and documentation of excess soil that existed on-site.
The excess soil was a result of changing elevations from the long-time former industrial facility and the poor geotechnical quality of the existing fill and upper soils. Although the new excess soil regulations were not yet established in Ontario, XCG’s client desired to follow the general requirements for assessment, management and documentation. Aside from the hydrocarbon- and metals-impacted soils that were delineated and appropriately managed at a soil processing facility, an additional 9,850 cubic metres (19,700 tonnes) of soil required removal from the site to establish the necessary grades for parking and improved stormwater run-off.
XCG assisted the client and the contractors to identify the quality of the soil and geotechnical properties needed (with the assistance of a geotechnical engineering sub-consultant) and provided the documentation for the appropriate off-site soil relocation. Documentation included the identification of the source soils, the chemical quality of the soil from laboratory analyses, and volume. Comparison of the soil to quality Standards established by the Ontario Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change assisted in identifying the ultimate relocation sites.
