Sunshine Coast Regional District, British Columbia

XCG has a long and extensive history of working with the Sunshine Coast Regional District.

Over the last 11 years XCG has completed the following projects with the Sunshine Coast Regional District:

Sechelt Landfill

Multiple Design, Operations and Closure plans - XCG has prepared a number of Design, Operations and Closure Plans and updates which identified areas of the landfill that needed to be improved and also presented options for increasing waste disposal capacity within the permitted landfill footprint. The 2017 Design, Operations and Closure Plan was completed to the 2016 BC MOE Landfill Criteria for Municipal Solid Waste.

Landfill Gas Assessment and Landfill Gas Collection Estimate – XCG evaluated the landfill gas production at the Site, the impacts of waste diversion on landfill gas production and an estimated cost to install a landfill gas collection system.

Closure Design – XCG Provided detailed design and services during construction for construction of final cover over a portion of the landfill,  including regrading and a composite final cover including a sand foundation layer, a LDPE geomembrane, a synthetic drainage layer (Drain-tube), a clay protective layer, organic soil and vegetation layer.

Hydrogeological Assessment – XCG provided a hydrogeological assessment in 2016 as well as an updated assessment in 2020. Both hydrogeological assessments were completed to the 2016 BC MOE Landfill Criteria for Municipal Solid Waste.

The tasks undertaken as part of the hydrogeological assessments included water level measurement and groundwater flow mapping, assessment of groundwater analytical results, calculation of horizontal and vertical hydraulic gradients, in-situ hydraulic testing at select groundwater monitoring wells,  calculation of hydraulic conductivity in the various water-bearing units by applying  analytical modelling techniques, review of regional water supply and geologic mapping studies, and updating of hydrogeologic cross sections and the site conceptual model.

Leachate Management Plan – XCG Provided a leachate management plan in 2016, as well as an updated plan in 2020. Both leachate management plans were completed to the 2016 BC MOE Landfill Criteria for Municipal Solid Waste.

Drop Off Area Design – Included 50%, 75%, and 90% designs and meetings with the SCRD to discuss the design after each stage. The 100% design consisted of a complete tender package including front end documents, specification and detailed design drawings.  During construction XCG undertook the contract administration and construction oversight.

Waste Composition Study - In May 2022, XCG completed the spring waste composition study. Field staff spent two weeks at the Sechelt landfill sorting, weighing and reporting on waste types and quantities.

Additional Monitoring Wells - As per the 2020 Hydrogeological Assessment XCG completed the installation of 3 new monitoring wells at the Sechelt Landfill.

Pender Harbour Landfill

Closure Design – XCG Provided detailed design and services during construction for construction of final cover over a portion of the landfill.

Transfer Station Design and Construction – Included 50%, 75%, and 90% designs and meetings with the SCRD to discuss the design after each stage. The 100% design consisted of a complete tender package including front end documents, specification and detailed design drawings. XCG provided services during construction along with a construction summary report.

Along with the above noted major project and reports XCG has completed the annual monitoring report, liability letters and landfill gas assessments for the Sechelt Landfill, Pender Harbour Landfill and Gibsons Landfill.
