The City of Red Deer Waste Management Facility landfill is a double-lined design with a leachate collection system. The approval for the landfill includes a requirement that it operate as a minimum head landfill, maintaining less than 300 millimeters of leachate head on the liner at all times. Historically, leachate was trucked from the site to the City’s Wastewater Treatment Plant. As the landfill increased in size, the quantity of leachate being generated increased and the practice of trucking the leachate was no longer practical or cost effective.
The City of Red Deer retained XCG to design a sustainable leachate management system for the landfill. XCG understood that key considerations for selecting the most appropriate leachate management system for the site included economic, environmental, and social impacts.

XCG completed a Concept Development Report to present the results of leachate generation modelling, leachate quality assessment, and a Wastewater Treatment Plant impact assessment. The report also provided an extensive list of leachate management options, detailing costs and operational impacts for each alternative. Based on the Concept Development Report, a pumping station and force main was selected as the preferred design.
XCG prepared detailed design drawings, specifications, and tender documents for the leachate pumping station and force main. XCG assisted with the tendering process, and oversaw all construction activities.
