Just like Wiarton Willie, XC Groundhog did not see his shadow yesterday and spring will
arrive early this year. An early spring will have everyone excited for a party on June 5th. As XCG gets ready for our 30th year, we asked our president, Tom Williams, to share a few words about XCG’s 30th Anniversary with our friends:
A lucky few discover early in life what they want to do when they grow up. For the rest of us, deciding our career path is an exercise of uncertainty and experimentation. In my case, I originally went to university to become a metallurgical engineer but here I am, 32 years later, a geological engineer in the environment industry. How did that happen? While contemplating my career path shortly after graduating from university, I realized I really hadn’t figured out what I wanted to do with the rest of my life.
During my early university days, I dreamed of graduating, accepting the ideal job, and then sailing through a successful career where everything falls in place. This is rarely how it happens. As I take the time now to reflect on, and appreciate, the years I have spent in the environmental consulting business, I realize that the question was not what I wanted to do with the rest of my life but rather who I wanted to be and how I wanted to devote my energy.
A few years after graduation, I found my purpose at XCG and have been here ever since.
Fast forward to Feb. 2, 2020 and XCG is celebrating its 30th anniversary! I’m proud to be leading a company where people share values of trust, honesty, integrity, respect, and compassion. We have cultivated an environment for curious, engaged, creative, patient, and generous people to grow, build strong relationships, accomplish career goals and enjoy life. A place where we learn from mistakes, celebrate our many successes, and concentrate on core strengths that can vault us over future challenges. Over the last 30 years we have made many friends - employees and clients alike. Some have stayed with us for decades! It is these lasting and loyal relationships that have encouraged us, inspired us, taught us, and frustrated us at times, but ultimately shaped XCG to be the “Expert People, Better Decisions” company we are today.
Now as we celebrate our 30th year, let’s take the time to also celebrate the stories of XCG, the people we have met, the fun projects we have been part of, and the strong relationships we have built. I’m glad I never went into the mining industry after graduation, as I know now that there is no better place than the environment sector to devote my energy and no better people to share my time with than with the amazing people of XCG.

As Tom said, over the next year we will be celebrating the stories of XCG. We will highlight the people and the projects that not only make XCG what it is today, but also look back on some of the people and projects that helped shape XCG’s earlier years.
